Waterfront Trails

Walk, Wander and Explore by the Water

In Thunder Bay, some of the best ways to experience the city begin with a simple walk. Lake Superior, the harbour, rivers and inland waterways shape the landscape, creating scenic trails where visitors can slow down, get outside and see the city from a different perspective.

Whether you are looking for an easy morning stroll, a longer walk surrounded by nature or somewhere to stretch your legs between plans, Thunder Bay offers plenty of ways to explore beside the water. The city’s recreational trail network extends for more than 30 kilometres, with many routes following lakes and rivers throughout the community. (Visit Thunder Bay)

Start at Prince Arthur’s Landing

For guests staying at Delta Hotels Thunder Bay, the easiest place to begin is right outside the door.

Prince Arthur’s Landing stretches along the Lake Superior waterfront with walking paths, marina views, public art and open spaces overlooking the Sleeping Giant. The paths are easy to explore at your own pace, whether you have twenty minutes before dinner or an entire afternoon to spend outside. (Visit Thunder Bay)

Watch sailboats move through the harbour, stop to take in the artwork scattered throughout the park or simply find a quiet place beside the lake. Thunder Bay also offers a self-guided public art walking tour through the waterfront, making it easy to add a little culture to your walk. (Visit Thunder Bay)

It is one of those places that changes throughout the day. Mornings feel calm and open, summer afternoons bring more activity to the waterfront, and evenings offer changing light across the harbour and Lake Superior.

Follow the Water Beyond Downtown

There is more to explore once you venture beyond the immediate waterfront.

Boulevard Lake Park offers a multi-use trail around the lake, making it a favourite for walkers, runners and cyclists. With parkland, beaches and recreation areas surrounding the water, it is an easy option when you want a longer outing without travelling far from the city. The accessible trail loop is approximately 5.5 kilometres. (Visit Thunder Bay)

On Thunder Bay’s south side, Kaministiquia River Park offers another perspective, with a walkway beside the river as well as public art and local history along the route. (Visit Thunder Bay)

Each area feels a little different, but they share the same opportunity to experience Thunder Bay at a slower pace.

Discover Mission Island Marsh

For a walk that feels closer to nature, visit Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area.

The conservation area includes approximately 2.4 kilometres of trails through several distinct ecosystems, along with a fully accessible boardwalk and views toward the Sleeping Giant. The marsh is also an important habitat for wildlife and is particularly well known for birding. (Visit Thunder Bay)

It is a peaceful contrast to the downtown waterfront and a reminder of how quickly the city gives way to Northern Ontario’s natural landscape.

Take your time, keep an eye on the water and surrounding vegetation, and let the trail set the pace.

Make the Walk Part of Your Day

You do not need hiking boots or a packed itinerary to enjoy Thunder Bay’s waterfront trails. Some of the best outings are the simplest ones: a morning walk before breakfast, an afternoon by the marina, a family stroll after exploring the city or a quiet loop before dinner.

The waterfront also connects naturally with the surrounding Waterfront District, where shops, cafés, galleries and restaurants make it easy to extend your walk into a full afternoon. That same connection between the lake and the city runs through many of the existing Delta Bay stories. (Delta Bay Club)
